Dolphin Aquarium & Pet Products, Inc. was established as a corporation in 1978. Business was initially based upon the manufacture of aquariums and fish breeding, and then it subsequently evolved to the manufacture of ultra efficient centrifugal pumps. From its inception, Dolphin's ultimate goal has been to manufacture ultra efficient, biologically based water treatment systems in which the water quality rivals that found in natural ecosystems.
Traditionally ponds, aquariums, and aquaculture systems have been designed similar to swimming pools. These systems commonly operate using high amperage pumps, pressure filters, small piping, UV Sterilizers, and chillers. Maintenance usually consists of partial water changes along with the use of chemical medications. Through experience, we have found this type of set-up to be inefficient and problematic in maintaining a biologically balanced system. Our desire to alleviate these problems led to more than 20 years research and development of a unique water treatment system as opposed to a water filtration system.
We began by switching to an ultra efficient, high volume pump designed to run on low pressure using a larger manifold (pipe). Through this set-up we were able to move the high volume of water needed to operate the system with lower power consumption, less friction, and virtually no heat transfer. Then, working with chemists and biologists, we were able to develop genetically enhanced, superior microorganisms which provide a very successful means of water treatment. Water changes were found to be extremely inhibitory to these microorganisms; subsequently, the next step was to eliminate partial water changes. By creating a means of constant incoming and outgoing water, we were able to eliminate the need for water changes and, in turn, dramatically lower maintenance. At the same time we also found the use of chemical medications and UV Sterilizers to be inhibitory to the biological balance of the system.
Our water treatment system runs naturally based on providing multiple environments for our very specialized microorganisms that produce a virtually disease free environment for fish to thrive and naturally spawn, and yield the highest water quality found in an artificial environment. When maintained properly, our biologically based water treatment system provides an otherwise unobtainable healthy environment for both freshwater and marine fish.
