Obtaining Maximum
Pump & Seal Life

  1. In a sump set up a Dolphin Commercial Pre Filter is recommended on the wet side of the sump, just before the bulkhead fitting. For best results use Dolphin Part # PP:10078. The use of this pre filter will extend seal life to a maximum of seven years in a Reef environment (the most corrosive of all water types). While protecting the pump and seal, this pre filter also acts as an excellent biological filter.

  2. Never use a 90 degree elbow pointing downward in your sump. This will cause the pump to act as a sump vacuum cleaner and wear the pump seal rapidly. If you use this to prevent siphoning of air from the surface, use a length of slotted pipe instead. You always want your intake pipe to be at least 3-4” off the bottom of the sump, especially if you are not using a pre filter.

  3. On a closed loop system always have your intakes at least 8-10” off the bottom of the tank or pond. This will help prevent sand and debris from entering the pump, (extending pump seal life). Also consider using two intakes instead of one to reduce overall suction. The use of the Dolphin Commercial Pre Filter is optimum when incorporated into this type of system.

  4. On systems that are drawing water up and over sumps or up hill from ponds a priming basket and flapper check valve must be used to maintain prime and avoid run dry situations which will result in seal damage.

  5. The pump wet end must be completely flooded before the pump is turned on. DO NOT PLUG THE PUMP IN DRY TO SEE IF IT WILL START. This will cause a few months of normal wear in just a few moments, or cause the seal to bind or fuse, which will result in motor damage.

  6. If the pump has run dry for long periods of time, or if the pump is leaking between the wet end and the front of the motor, the pump should be sent to Dolphin for seal replacement under 9 year extended warranty. If you do not have a back-up pump, loaner pumps are sometimes available for a refundable deposit. Sending the pump in is recommended for professional inspection, repair and leakage guarantee. Seal Kits with instructions are available from Dolphin Pumps or from where the pump was purchased. Note: All seals installed by owners and service providers are NOT guaranteed against leakage.

  7. If you follow the basic guide above your new pump seal will last from 3-7 years under normal operation.
